As an exchange student in France, making the most of weekends to explore this beautiful country is a must. One of the best destinations for a short trip is, of course, Paris—the City of Light. With its iconic landmarks, rich history, and vibrant culture, Paris is a dream destination for students on a budget. And for an added touch of magic, I made sure to include a visit to Disneyland Paris during my weekend adventure.
Here’s how I managed an unforgettable weekend in Paris without breaking the bank!
Day 1: Exploring the City of Light
Arrival and Accommodation
I arrived in Paris early Saturday morning via a budget-friendly train (check SNCF for discounts or Ouigo for low-cost options). For accommodation, I stayed in a cozy hostel near Montmartre, which cost around €30 per night. Hostels like St. Christopher’s Inn or Generator Paris offer clean, safe rooms and are perfect for meeting fellow travelers.
Morning: Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur
I started my day in Montmartre, wandering through its charming cobblestone streets. The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, perched on a hill, offers stunning panoramic views of the city—and best of all, it’s free to visit!
Afternoon: Louvre Museum and Surroundings
From Montmartre, I took the metro to the Louvre Museum. As an exchange student, I got free entry to the museum by showing my student visa (European students under 26 often qualify for discounts or free entry). After admiring masterpieces like the Mona Lisa, I strolled through the Jardin des Tuileries for a relaxed picnic lunch with a baguette, cheese, and fruit from a local market (€5-7).
Evening: Eiffel Tower and Seine River Walk
No trip to Paris is complete without seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night! Afterward, I enjoyed a peaceful evening walk along the Seine River, soaking in the magic of Paris at night.
Day 2: A Magical Escape to Disneyland Paris
On Sunday, it was time to let my inner child out at Disneyland Paris! Here’s how I made this bucket-list experience affordable:
Getting to Disneyland Paris
Disneyland Paris is located about 40 minutes from the city center. I took the RER A train, which cost just €5 each way. It’s a fast, convenient way to reach the park.
Tickets and Discounts
For Disneyland tickets, I booked online in advance to snag a discounted day pass for €62. Students can also check for seasonal promotions or group deals. While a bit of a splurge, it was well worth it for a full day of fun and adventure!
Inside the Park
I packed my own snacks and a water bottle to save on food costs inside the park, which can be expensive. I focused on experiencing the most iconic attractions, like Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and, of course, the enchanting Disney Castle. The parades and fireworks were the perfect end to my visit, adding a touch of magic to the weekend.
My weekend in Paris, capped with a visit to Disneyland Paris, was a dream come true. The key to enjoying such trips as an exchange student is planning ahead and making smart spending choices. With the right mindset, even iconic destinations like Paris can be enjoyed on a budget.
So, pack your bags and get ready for your own magical weekend—because adventure is always waiting, just beyond the map!
